Bach - John Nelson-Orchestre de Chamber de Paris - Mass in b

opname Notre Dame (met dak ;-))

Ive loved this piece for years and have played my CD to death. I only ordered this because Im a passionate follower of Joyce DiDonato and buy anything on which she is performing. I was very pleasantly surprised to find this is a phenomenal performance of the Mass. John Nelson was fascinating to watch as a conductor who is heart and soul immersed in this music. The orchestra is superb, the concert mistress especially wonderful to watch and listen to, and all soloists are just tops. (I ended up ordering a couple of CDs by one of the male soloists as a result of my first viewing of this.) The performance is in one of the most wonderful churches in the world, and it adds enormously to the power of the music. Several other reviewers on here have stated that the Sanctus is too fast, but while it is faster than I have heard it elsewhere, I thought it was the right speed in the context of the entire performance. The whole DVD is just gripping and the camera work is good most of the time though a few more shots of the soloists instead of cycling back round to the same two double bass players would have been appreciated. If you love this music, buy yourself the DVD, pop it in, and enjoy listening to it even if you dont have time to sit down and watch. One of the best buys Ive made in a long time.
